LETTER OF SUPPORT // AGAINST CIS-SEXIST JOURNALISM

!!RADS-Letter of support for Kerosin95 against the cis-sexist attacks of Karl Fluch (DER STANDARD) !!

Yesterday, the Newspaper “Der Standard” released an incredibly cis-sexist interview with the non-binary musician Kathrin Kolleritsch, also known as Kerosin95.
The interview was held by the journalist Karl Fluch, whose openly transphobic and cis-sexist “journalism” apparently was committed to misunderstanding the interviewpartner.
The way his questions were asked where not only poorly researched, but most importantly, they were asked without respect and in a way that reflects cis-normative structural-violence-patterns against non-binary and trans-people.
With his quite set and preconceived notions about what the output of this interview should be, it seemed he wanted to prove that gendered language and non-binary identities are secondary or not important.
We support the experience of Kathrin Kolleritsch, because we know that in our communities many people come out in their gender nonconformity, but still wouldn’t go public. We think this is the consequence of a long standing institutionalized sexism, which is supported by articles like the one from Karl Fluch in the centrist-liberal “Der Standard”.
We know out of historic facts, that people come out in their communities, but neither in public, nor to the state. The Austrian state specifically only quite recently and in adhesion with structural violent barriers, opened the possibility to be non-binary in official IDs.
We strongly object to a non-linked, non-significant statistic being used against the expierence of Kathrin Kolleritsch, just to invalidate them. [Studies in the scientific peer-reviewed journal “Nature” object and disprove this invalidation through Karl Fluch.]
A fellow RADS described it perfectly: “𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘪𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘰 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦.

The behaviour of “Der Standard” and Karl Fluch is the perfect example of the emotionally abusive toxic masculinity, that aims to rewrite the perspective of anyone who doesn’t fit in their preset belive-system.
This way you can be an ally as a cis-person:
🏳️‍⚧️ – Take a stand.
🏳️‍⚧️ – Write a Leserbrief to Standard
🏳️‍⚧️ – Send a complaint to the Standard-editorial office and the press council (Presserat)
🏳️‍⚧️ – Reflect on your own priviliges.
🏳️‍⚧️ – Reflect on your priviliges in the society’s “common”, cis-normative language-patterns.
🏳️‍⚧️ – Inform yourself, be sensitive and don’t let trans-people or non-binary people do all the educational work for you. Hence talk to your friends and families about it.
🏳️‍⚧️ – LISTEN to and respect non-binary and trans-people around you.
🏳️‍⚧️ – Call out people who say or do sexist things, even if nobody in the group or situation seems to be affected.
